Job Summary
The Deputy Director plays a vital role within the leadership team of the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS), responsible for advancing the IGHS mission and achieving the organization's goals. This role reports directly to the Executive Director of IGHS and holds overarching responsibility for the administrative and mission-focused activities of IGHS, encompassing both domestic and global initiatives. They also provide strategic advice on a range of issues affecting IGHS and UCSF's global operations, including program priorities, areas of future investment, partnerships with UCSF Schools and Departments, partnerships with external organizations, recruitment of high-profile faculty and staff management team, and the implications of critical trends in the global health landscape for IGHS and UCSF. This is a multifaceted position that requires reasoning and management skills, a high degree of independence, and diplomatic skills appropriate to the duties of the senior administrative officer. The IGHS Deputy Director must have deep knowledge of global health, have exceptional communication skills, and able to have informed dialogue with key stakeholders to engender a sense of trust and expertise. The Deputy Director will play a key role in helping IGHS achieve its aspirations for significant growth. The Deputy Director represents and serves as a proxy in the absence of the Executive Director, and makes choices that impact the direction, focus, and performance of the Institute. The Deputy Director must possess exceptional skills in effectively communicating messages, strategic visions, and/or campaigns to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders by crafting compelling visuals and presentations. They must demonstrate outstanding presentation skills, crucial for representing the leadership role within IGHS. This entails confidently articulating a visionary perspective to diverse stakeholders. Furthermore, they should take initiative in crafting clear, accessible content and conceptualizing visuals that effectively convey IGHS's goals. Creativity and partnership are essential components of position.

Department Description
The Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) is a campus wide interdisciplinary program that reports to the Chancellor. IGHS is structured as an Organized Research Unit (ORU) and control point that oversees a portfolio of $330M in sponsored programs (including $80-90M per year in grants and cooperative agreements expenses), two graduate groups that confer Masters and PhD degrees, and an administrative unit that provides communication, financial management, event planning, staffing support, operations, and program development support to faculty members working in global health across the campus.
IGHS's mission is to advance health and reduce health disparities worldwide, with a focus on vulnerable populations. IGHS is continuing to expand its programmatic activities into new regions (Latin America and Asia) and new themes (e.g., transdisciplinary research in infectious disease, maternal and child health, and non-communicable diseases, pandemic preparedness, digital health, climate change, and migrant health). It also is working to develop new educational program offerings (degree and certificate) and partnerships with academic institutions in the US and in low- and middle-income (LMIC) countries. It also has engagements domestically with public health programs, including the California Department of Public Health.
