Job Description
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I works under close supervision of the Manager, EH&S, to implement, and provide support and assistance to the Environment, Health, and Safety functions in order to ensure a positive, safe, healthy, and incident-free workplace for Penumbra employees, contractors, and visitors to Penumbra's facilities.

The EH&S Specialist I will learn to use professional concepts and applies company policies and procedures to resolve routine issues.

The position works on problems of limited scope and follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. EH&S Specialist I builds stable working relationships internally, and normally receives detailed instructions on all work.

While having a general knowledge company-wide, the position will focus on compliance, risk-based management, monitoring, and training.

This position would also respond to emergency situations when they arise and can have flexible working hours covering all shifts and may work overtime or weekends when needed.

The position may also be assigned to perform work in other Penumbra facilities.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
* Implements EH&S programs, as assigned, such as, but not limited to, hazardous wastes, AED (Automated External Defibrillator), first aid supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency eyewash.
* Implements procedures, programs, and submits regulatory reports in compliance with the local, state, and/or federal agencies.
* Communicates closely with and takes instructions from the EH&S Manager to achieve department goals and organizational goals according to key metrics.
* Works with EH&S Manager and EH&S team for promotion of safety in the workplace, community, or industry safety groups.
* Attends and assists with the Safety Committee and its subcommittees.
* Supports in the conduct of hazard and risk assessments in cooperation with departments.
* Performs ergonomic evaluations and recommends control strategies to address risk factors.
* Trains employees on EH&S programs to meet standards and enhance company safety culture including, but not limited to, new employee orientation (NEO) and other EH&S training.
* Assists with special environmental projects and worker's compensation program.
* Investigate EH&S incidents including, but not limited to, injuries, illnesses, environment-related incidents, and near-miss events.
* Inspects facilities to detect existing hazards, conducts risk assessment, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
* Assists with the company's contractor safety program.
* Supports with the emergency response to incidents.
* Maintains documentation and records on EH&S programs including, but not limited to, CAL-OSHA, Fed- OSHA, FDA, County, CAL-EPA, Air District, Utility District, CUPA, and other State and local authorities.
* Attend and complete EH&S training for professional development, and other Penumbra-required training.
* Adhere to the Company's Quality Management System (QMS) as well as domestic and global quality system regulations, standards, and procedures.
* Understands relevant security, privacy and compliance principles and adheres to the regulations, standards, and procedures that are applicable to the Company.
* Ensure other members of the department follow the QMS, regulations, standards, and procedures.
* Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Position Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or related sciences with 1+ years of related experience in a medical device or pharmaceutical industry, manufacturing, laboratory operations, academia, insurance, consulting, and/or health care.
* Basic knowledge and/or experience on compliance to California's OSHA general industry safety orders that apply to facilities-related activities, including safe work practices and personal protection, basic fire protection, lock out-tag out, hazardous materials, basic ergonomics, material handling and movement, ladder safety, hazardous materials and hazardous wastes, emergency response, and other related Cal-OSHA requirements that apply to Penumbra.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other standard office tools.
* Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
* Ability to communicate with all levels of employees, contractors, and suppliers
* Ability to understand information such as labels and instructions, receive job
assignments and communicate progress and/or completion of assignments.
* Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work.
* Ability to work a varied schedule, as needed, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
* Knowledge and/or experience on Title 22 Hazardous Waste Generator, ladder safety, industrial hygiene
* Basic knowledge of Air Quality Management District regulations and CUPA rules
* First-Aid CPR trained, forklift train-the-trainer, portable fire extinguisher, valid driver's license

Working Conditions
* General office, warehouse, clean room, laboratory, shipping and receiving environments.
* Willingness and ability to work on site. May have business travel from 0% - 5%
* Occasional exposure to chemicals with potential minor exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
* Requires occasional unassisted lifting and moving of up to 50 pounds.
* Must be able to move between buildings and floors.
* Must be able to remain stationary and use a computer or other standard office equipment, such as a printer or copy machine, for an extensive period of time each day.
* Must be able to read, prepare emails, and produce documents and spreadsheets.
* Must be able to move within the office and access file cabinets or supplies, as needed.
* Must be able to communicate and exchange accurate information with employees at all levels on a daily basis.
* This position may require working other than normal business hours and may travel to other facilities depending on the needs of the Company.

Base Pay Range Per Hour: $25.20 to $37.80
Individual compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, work location and shift, and will increase over time based on meeting performance and business needs.
