Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) has an opening for a Material Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will be part of the Non-Equilibrium Magnetic Materials (NEMM) program, aiming to advancing the fundamental science of non-equilibrium magnetic materials and phenomena in thin-film materials with strong spin-orbit interactions in the presence of interfacially induced or local inversion-symmetry breaking. You will work with a highly interactive and dynamic team, and carry out research activities combining the design, fabrication, measurement, and modeling of static and dynamic magnetic properties of thin film materials exhibiting strong spin-orbit interactions and inversion symmetry breaking due to interfaces or local structure, particularly the dynamics and thermodynamics of spin accumulation, skyrmions and spin textures.

What You Will Do:

  • Design and synthesize thin film and multilayered magnetic systems using state-of-the-art sputtering and e-beam evaporation techniques.
  • Fabricate magnetic nanopatterned materials using advanced e-beam lithography tools.
  • Perform advanced magnetic characterization studies including macroscopic magnetometry, x-ray spectromicroscopy and scattering techniques, and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy at large scale user facilities.
  • Prepare manuscripts and reports.
  • Publish research findings in high-impact peer reviewed technical journals and conferences, and stay current on recent research in the field by reading published literature.
  • Make presentations at scientific meetings and seminars.
  • Carry out collaborative research with research associates, post-doctoral scholars, visiting scientists and students at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as well as colleagues in other national labs and universities.
  • Provide assistance to maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Participate in research proposal writing.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Material Sciences, or a closely related field.
  • Solid knowledge of nanomagnetism and fundamental aspects of spintronics
  • Significant experience with magnetic thin film deposition and nanopatterning techniques, and a range of magnetic characterization techniques, including magnetometry, x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray scattering, and x-ray microscopy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to design experiments, conduct independent research and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
  • Ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment and initiative, as well as to collaborate with other researchers in a diverse team environment.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and experience with micromagnetic simulations.
  • Experience with synthesis and characterization of magnetic materials.

For Consideration, please apply by May 1, 2024 with the following application materials:

  • Cover Letter - Describe your interest in this position and the relevance of your background.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume, including a list of publications.
  • A list of your most significant 3-5 publications.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $5,374.00- $6,444.00 and is expected to start at $5,374.00/ mo or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA and in UC Berkeley campus growth and characterization facilities.
