Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, formal training programs, or on-the-job training. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in the HVAC trade with at least two years of automated systems control operations.

Position Summary
In support of accommodating more than 9,000 residents, the HVAC Control Systems Technician is essential in the domain of building automation and HVAC operations, responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and enhancing Building Management Systems (BMS). With expertise in electronic, electro-mechanical, and IT skills, the position ensures integration and optimal performance of HVAC control systems. Collaborating with engineers and contractors, the technician plans and schedules installation and repair operations, staying informed about emerging technologies to provide innovative solutions. Additionally, the position is on-call for emergency system failures, guaranteeing swift responses. As part of a skilled craft team, the incumbent contributes not only to the efficient operation of HVAC systems but also to broader initiatives such as coordinating projects and supporting data collection efforts, highlighting their crucial role in the field. This position participates in the on-call program.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Considerable knowledge of the HVAC trade, including automated control systems.
  • Knowledge of test and diagnostic equipment, instruments, and hand/ power tools.
  • Ability to read and analyze building blueprints, HVAC systems diagrams, and specifications.
  • Effectively communicate with engineers, contractors, vendors, and system users.
  • Knowledge of local and state electrical codes, occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Understanding of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the HVAC trade.
Physical Demands
  • Climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolds; work from a ladder or scaffold.
  • Bend at the waist and knees.
  • Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods.
  • Use hand tools and power tools.
  • Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.

  • Operate, troubleshoot, and repair building HVAC systems.
  • Maintain, inspect, and repair pneumatic, electronic, electric, and DDC HVAC system controls.
  • Utilize TAB techniques for diagnostic duties and system repairs.
  • Program, design, and modify HVAC sub-systems of electronic building automation systems.

  • Discuss system malfunctions with users to assist in problem isolation.
