Under the close supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), the incumbent will assist in research to investigate mechanisms of viral pathogenesis. Specifically, the research includes assisting to investigate how viral proteins trigger the breakdown of endothelial and epithelial barriers, resulting in vascular leak. The incumbent will assist in conducting diverse biological assays including tissue culture techniques, genetic perturbation of human and mouse cell lines, viral infections, molecular cloning, protein expression and purification, protein analysis assays (western blots and ELISAs), immunofluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry. Assistance in vivo experiments will also be required including mouse infections and vascular leak assays.

The Staff Research Associate will assist in performing experiments and assist with the analysis of data. In addition, the successful candidate will perform some laboratory management work including preparation of reagents, maintaining lab equipment, and making/maintaining an inventory of samples. Incumbent will also assist other lab members in their experiments as needed. The incumbent will assist in the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Perform other duties as assigned.

• Theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology as acquired through the completion of a BA/BS in one of these disciplines or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.

• Experience with molecular biology techniques as acquired through a lab course and or research experience including DNA cloning, transformation, and protein analyses, etc.

• Experience with and/or understanding of basic laboratory equipment: centrifuges, balances, power supplies, electrophoresis apparatus, pH meter, spectrophotometer, as acquired through a lab course and or research experience.

• Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills and improve existing skills.

• Ability to organize and carry out efficiently multiple and varied tasks during each workday.

• Ability to maintain clear, concise lab notes and records.

• Experience and skill with word processing, filemaking, spreadsheet, and graphics software (PC and MAC preferred).

• Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

• Excellent interpersonal communication skills to provide undergraduate training and collaborate with all lab members.

• Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.

• Ability to learn new experimental methods, and work independently or collaboratively with other lab members, with accuracy and attention to detail.

• Skilled to train others in basic lab support techniques and procedures (preparation of media, dishwashing, etc.) and safety requirements.

• Ability to hire, train and provide work direction for undergraduate student lab employees.

• Demonstrated knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles, etc. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.

• Experience with routine human cell culture work, genome editing, and/or fluorescence microscopy.

• Must be available to work variable schedules according to what is needed for particular experiments. This means that working evenings or weekends may be required on occasion.

• Willingness to work with viruses including dengue virus, Zika virus, Kunjin virus, a vaccine strain of yellow fever virus, norovirus, astrovirus, vesicular stomatitis virus, coronaviruses, and replication incompetent lentiviruses.

• Willingness to work with mice.

• Willingness to work with human cell lines that may harbor human pathogens.

• Willingness to work with hazardous chemicals.
