POSITION SUMMARY:

The Administrative Director for Accreditation and Strategy provides administrative and strategic oversight and direction for all accreditation activities and efforts that fall under the Office of Graduate Medical Education (GME). These activities include the supervision of operations, development and execution of strategic initiatives related to accreditation, and ensuring regulatory compliance with governing bodies such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Committee on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), and American Dental Association (ADA). The Administrative Director reports to the Designated Institution Official (DIO) in GME and manages departmental activities to meet residency/fellowship program and hospital needs and objectives in accordance with operating policies and accreditation requirements. The Director provides overall direction to managers in planning, directing and organizing their respective areas and ensures the efficient, economic, and quality performance of GME. The Administrative Director provides leadership for continuous service and quality improvement, innovation and staff empowerment, and leads efforts to demonstrate effective internal and external customer relations. This position requires the ability to work independently, use sound judgment, interpret and disseminate hospital policies and procedures to all ACGME and non-ACGME programs, and analytically review data to assist in the operational decision process. The Director will work closely with their counterpart, the Administrative Director for Operations and Program Administration to effectively drive operations, develop new initiatives, address opportunities for improvement, and continue to grow GME at Boston Medical Center.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  • In collaboration with the DIO, translates hospital mission and goals into departmental goals and objectives. Defines, develops and implements short- and long-term strategies and plans to meet organizational objectives with direction and support from the DIO and in partnership with the Administrative Director for Operations and Program Administration. Identifies needs and barriers in relation to attaining goals and objectives based on data and analysis of available information.
  • Analyzes current processes to identify and evaluate program strengths and weaknesses in relation to operational effectiveness and against accreditation standards. Develops strategies and plans for adapting to the changing landscape of GME accreditation and oversight, and drives their implementation. Leads strategy and improvement projects and initiatives within the GME department as they pertain to accreditation and other strategic initiatives.
  • Is forward thinking, and works with partners to prioritize, develop, and execute on strategic initiatives for our GME enterprise, identifying opportunities for improvement while also addressing gaps in our accreditation infrastructure. Oversees institutional accreditation requirements, including GME processes such as Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), Special Reviews, and Accreditation Data System (ADS) updates.
  • Ensures the highly productive and cost effective quality performance of the department. Works with assigned managers and coordinators, Program Directors and Administrators, and Quality Leaders to provide for the analysis and development of operating policies, systems, programs, and standards. Establishes, approves, and implements administrative policies and procedures that align with organizational priorities and support accreditation efforts.
  • In collaboration with the Graduate Medical Education Senior Finance Manager and the Administrative Director for Operations and Program Administration maintains fiscal oversight over departmental activities ensuring that clinical departments and training programs operate within allocated funds. Analyzes department spending plans and monitors department compliance with budgetary policy. Explores and resolves budgetary variances in collaboration with the Senior Finance Manager. Assists in the development of programs to improve revenue and reduce expenses.
  • Serves as a liaison for the Residency and Fellowship Programs to the GME office and hospital leadership, including, but not limited to, questions pertaining to accreditation standards, regulations, policies, and best practices. Works with other GME team members to onboard new Program Directors and Program Administrators, and develops effective strategies for continual education of new accreditation standards. Oversees work to address variability across programs with processes such as evaluations, policy development, and program evaluation.
  • Develops infrastructure and oversees program and institutional preparation for site visits, as well as new applications, ADS updates, and other such accreditation materials
  • Works collaboratively with a variety of program representatives, residents/fellows, hospital managers, quality staff, medical staff, professional staff, and multi-disciplinary groups to achieve hospital goals and objectives while working to continuously improve our accreditation framework. Develops and maintains excellent communication and relationships with all departments.
  • Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals. Initiates, implements and supports development programs for administrative staff. Participates in the decision to hire, fire, commend, and discipline staff. Has the authority to assign and schedule work, evaluate performance, and solve grievances. Ensures a high level of employee morale and productivity by providing appropriate employee recognition and feedback with fair and equitable application of employee relations policies and practices.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare, or related field as well as a Master's level degree in education, administration, healthcare, or related field.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Work requires at least 5-7 years of progressively advanced administrative management; Advanced knowledge of and experience in ACGME accreditation work.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA):

  • Deep knowledge of Graduate Medical Education and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
  • Proven ability to translate a strategic plan into operational policy
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in change management and innovation development and implementation
  • Demonstrated track record of management of personnel and fiscal resources
  • Leadership ability to guide, direct, and mentor a multi-layered staff
  • Capable of program development, implementation and evaluation
  • Capable of long range program planning that involves complex decision making tasks
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Must be exceptionally organized to prioritize a multitude of diverse activities so as to meet strict deadlines
  • Dedicated team player with the willingness and desire to learn and grow within the organization
  • Ability to anticipate objections and plan appropriate responses; ability to perform and lead effectively in stressful situations and to solve problems as they occur
  • Professional in conduct and appearance
  • Proficient with standard software used in healthcare settings (i.e. MS Office products) and ability to learn new software (i.e. New Innovations)
