What The Role Is

Reporting to the Director of Grid Integration, the Manager of Grid Integration is responsible for managing project development and integration of Clearway's 18 GW of solar, wind, and battery storage project pipeline in multiple states throughout the U.S Western Interconnection. The Manager will directly support Clearway's Project and Business Development teams in applying for, managing, and obtaining interconnection agreements for all solar, wind, and storage projects. The Manager will perform interconnection feasibility studies, support, and provide direction to consultants and third-party development partners to process interconnection agreements, meet with utilities, coordinate interconnection engineering activities, and manage the overall grid integration process through commissioning. Additionally, the Manager will be engaged in transmission planning processes across the region and track ongoing as well as prospective transmission development.

This position will also be responsible for coordinating work with Clearway's Engineering, Construction and Operations departments.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Provide strategic, commercial, and technical input to the Development, Engineering and Construction teams regarding the development and grid integration of the company's growing project pipeline located in the Western Interconnection.
  • Develop and maintain a detailed and complete understanding of the interconnection and grid integration processes across ISO/RTOs and vertically integrated utilities.
  • Manage the interconnection study and grid integration process for Clearway's utility pipeline.
  • Attend utility and ISO/RTO project specific and stakeholder meetings, monitor interconnection policies and transmission planning processes in the Western Interconnection.
  • Communicate project's utility interconnection requirements, risks and opportunities to Development and Project Engineering Department.
  • Perform internal feasibility and system impact studies to support greenfield project screening and development.
  • Manage power systems engineering consultants in performing feasibility and system impact studies.
  • Work with Clearway's development engineering team to submit interconnect applications; identify critical interconnection study milestones, cost estimates, capital exposure risks and clearly communicate necessary information to stakeholders.
  • Manage quality of interconnection work and processes led by third party developers and EPCs for the company's portfolio.
  • Support engineering in optimizing projects' AC design and equipment selection considering grid interconnection requirements.
  • Support construction management and operation & maintenance in project commissioning.
What You'll Bring

Knowledge & Skills

  • Working knowledge of general FERC interconnection process, tariffs, and specific requirements for ISO/RTOs and vertically integrated utilities (Professional experience working with ISO/RTOs and utilities in the Western Interconnection would be a plus).
  • Excellent knowledge of interconnection study procedures with expert knowledge to perform power flow, short circuit, and dynamic studies.
  • Ability to establish strong relationships with ISOs/RTOs and utilities.
  • Proven problem solving and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment.
  • General knowledge of technical standards applicable to the project interconnection design.

Experience & Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related power systems modeling, transmission planning, operations, or grid integration experience.
  • Experience with power system analytical tools such as PSSE, TARA, PSLF, Power World.
  • Experience with scripting and automation of power system tools and excel dashboards.

  • Master's degree in Electrical Power Systems is preferred

The pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, relevant and demonstrated experience, education, training and certifications, and other factors permitted by law. This role is eligible to earn an annual cash bonus, subject to personal and company performance goals.

Salary Range Across all U.S. Locations
$124,000$184,000 USD
