Job Description

Moffatt & Nichol specializes in large complex waterfront infrastructure projects and is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in this field. We are actively looking for a Structural or Civil Engineer with an inspection and rehabilitation (I&R) background to join our Walnut Creek or Oakland, CA office. The ideal candidate would have experience supporting inspection related work for bridges, ports, terminals, piers, wharves, marinas and alike.

Your expertise would be used as an inspection and rehabilitation point person to support projects by coordinating activities, performing QAQC, writing reports and proposals, etc. You would interact directly with clients and potentially bring in new work. You would perform engineering design and inspections as time permits.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Develops plans, specifications, and cost estimates as needed to support waterfront and bridge infrastructure development and rehabilitation work
  • Helps resolve design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project
  • Calculates construction quantity estimates
  • Schedules work of team members for inspection related activities
  • Performs or reviews analysis, design, inspection of waterfront structures, asset management, submarine systems, and other maritime projects
  • Develops plans, specifications, and calculations as needed
  • May supervise engineers and technicians during field activities
  • Works closely with other disciplines including architects, engineers, scientists, project managers, etc. on multi-discipline projects
  • Performs structural site inspections and prepares inspection reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (with structural focus) or related discipline from an accredited university degree program; Master's degree is preferred
  • Professional Engineer licensure in the State of California or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within 6 months of hire
  • 6 to 15 years of related experience
  • NHI-130055 bridge inspection certification
  • Certified Commercial Diver (ADCI, HSE, DCBC, IMCA or ADAS) preferred but not required
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation) with strong technical writing capabilities
  • Valid driver's license in good standing
  • Experienced/licensed boat operator is a plus
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required. Travel is primarily within the state of employment, typically does not require an overnight stay and rarely on weekends
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Selected candidate must consent to and a pass a post-offer/pre-employment drug screening
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Base salary range:

  • $108,900 to $144,100 based on years of experience, level of education obtained, professional registration, and meeting required qualification in job description.
  • Base salary range only applicable for candidates who will be hired and working in the California market.

Working conditions:

The incumbent works in both the office and field:

  • Office work requires ongoing design work requiring focus
  • Field work requires diving in waters and exposure to extreme elements
  • Must be able to move among a variety of simultaneous priorities
  • Some extended days, evenings, and weekend work requirements

Physical requirements:

This role requires the incumbent to be in excellent physical condition:

  • ADCI (or equivalent is a preferred qualification) diving requires specific physical conditioning and strength
  • Field work requires incumbent to carry diving and inspection equipment over unpaved, rural, and unmarked terrain
  • The incumbent must be able to lift, carry, climb, and navigate in a small boat.
