Academy of Art University seeks a full-time Lead Metal Shop Technician to support the School of Jewelry & Metal Arts. Talented and creative wood and metal shop artists are welcome to apply for this wonderful opportunity. Responsibilities include:

  • Train all students how to safely use the Academy's wood and metal shops.
  • Provide support to a diverse student body and faculty on a variety of projects.
  • Consistently monitor safety in studios and shops. Must be able to address and remedy any potential safety concerns.
  • Maintain and update all OSHA / HAZMAT documents pertaining to the wood and metal shops as well as the tool room.
  • Perform general maintenance, simple construction and fabrication as assigned.
  • Issue and recover tools for students and Instructors.
  • Clean, repair and maintain all tools and machinery.
  • Regularly inventory shop tools and supplies.
  • Monitor the receiving area and distribute all packages as necessary.


  • Must possess a basic knowledge of the tools, materials, and techniques typical to the representation and fabrication of wood and metal fabrication both large and small scale.
  • Must be skilled in the operation of standard hand tools and large-scale equipment specific to that of a metal shop including, but not limited to:
    • TIG welder, Gas torch, metal cutting band saw, abrasive saw, pedestal grinder, etc.
    • Table saw, drill press, miter saw, band saw, router, belt sander, etc.
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills and be safety-minded at all times.
  • Must have a friendly and patient personality and enjoy working with a diverse student population.
  • Proficiency in with Microsoft Office, Adobe CS3 suite is a plus.
  • Must be able to consistently lift up to 70lbs.
