The Apple Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) is accountable for leading the development and implementation of innovative manufacturing processes across Apple’s worldwide supply base. In this highly collaborative role, you will work closely with Apple Industrial Design, Product Design, and Manufacturing Design partners, as well as our worldwide suppliers. The MDE role is empowered to bring creativity to Apple’s manufacturing approach, enabling us to deliver our best work to as many customers as possible.

Description

You will be a part of collaborative environment contributing to the creation, evaluation, and implementation of end-to-end manufacturing solutions for Apple’s mechanical enclosures. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders in Quality Engineering, Global Supply Management, Product Design, and Industrial Design in order to ensure our manufacturing solutions meet our product quality, cost, yield, capacity, schedule, and environmental goals. You will be expected to: • Work with Apple’s Industrial Design and Product Design teams to create working specifications related to Titanium manufacturing processes • Collaborate with premier equipment and process manufacturing partners to create next-generation processes and test limits of process capabilities • Determine feasibility to achieve aggressive goals evaluating manufacturing processes at early stages of product development • Plan and execute studies to confirm process capability to achieve technical goals for high volume programs • Present analysis to key decision makers that will be used to make commercial and design commitments • Work directly with overseas manufacturers implementing solutions meeting high-volume commercial goals • Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications • Conduct process optimization DOE’s, using data-driven and hands-on approaches to find solutions to complex challenges • Willingness to travel internationally to support manufacturing partner sites and collaborate with in-region team members • Develop and implement CNC machining, grinding and surface finishing processes that achieve challenging cosmetic & functional requirements in our highly visible enclosure designs.

Minimum Qualifications

Key Qualifications

  • 15+ years of experience in hands-on development of Titanium manufacturing processes, including understanding of raw material characteristics, and material processing using CNC machining, grinding, and surface finishing
  • Expertise relating material properties to design requirements, process drivers, and test methodologies
  • Ability to lead a development project from research phase into high scale manufacturing execution
  • Expertise using advanced analytical techniques to characterize mechanical properties
  • Project management experience and an understanding of problem solving tools including design of experiments, root cause analysis and statistical analytical tools
  • Strong ability to influence using clear and concise communication skills to make data driven manufacturing decisions
  • Experience with creating and controlling highly demanding surface finishes and their quantified characterization
  • Self-motivated with a dedication to delivering high quality results in a highly dynamic environment
  • A passion for manufacturing and engineering excellence. Unwillingness to compromise on quality and customer satisfaction

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Experience

MS or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing or materials engineering preferred.
