Job Description

We seek a highly motivated Associate Scientist / Scientist within Oncology Biomarker Development (OBD) Data Science to support biomarker and diagnostic development efforts focusing on Genentech's cancer immunotherapy pipeline. The incumbent will apply advanced bioinformatics and data analytics in collaboration with a group of translational biomarker scientists to execute on biomarker and companion diagnostic strategies for programs in clinical development. The incumbent will also apply these methods to characterize mechanisms of response and resistance to immunotherapy and inform novel research activities.

For this particular position, a strong background in cancer biology, immunology, bioinformatics and/or biostatistics, evidenced by peer reviewed publications in top tier journals, will be an important asset. The successful candidate is expected to effectively interact with cross functional teams; analyze multidimensional data supporting innovative clinical development programs and publications focused on biomarkers and disease mechanisms; interact with key internal and external collaborators and investigators; and promote collaborative efforts to advance biomarker research.

As an Associate Scientist / Scientist, you are expected to:

  • Manage and support analyses of multidimensional early- and late-stage clinical biomarker datasets including NGS-based DNA and RNA profiling
  • Effectively manage internal and external scientific collaborations
  • Drive scientific and technical innovation collaboratively with other members of the department
  • Support development and execution of exploratory biomarker and companion diagnostic strategies for multiple projects
  • Support publications in high impact scientific, technical or medical journals
  • Represent the biomarker team externally through interactions with our key investigators and public presentations
  • Participate and thrive in a fast-paced, interactive and team-oriented culture

Who You Are

  • PhD degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., immunology, molecular biology, cancer biology, genomics, or bioinformatics)
  • Minimum of 2 years postdoctoral experience in basic or translational research either in an academic or industry setting
  • Strong bioinformatics programming skills using R/Bioconductor and/or Python
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting high throughput genomic data, especially RNA-seq, whole exome sequencing and targeted NGS, is highly desired
  • Experience in integrating multiple omics layers in association with clinical and laboratory parameters would be highly beneficial
  • Experience with modern machine learning methods is desired
  • Experience in clinical drug development is beneficial, including understanding of critical development functions, such as biomarker development, operations, and biostatistics
  • Demonstrated record of scientific leadership as evidenced by first or senior author publications in high impact journals
  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills
