Job Summary

The Data Science Instructor will join the Data Science and Open Scholarship (DSOS) team within the UCSF Library to provide inclusive and empowering data science training to UCSF students, faculty, and staff, contributing to the Library's goal of being a campus hub for data science.

This position is in charge of designing and teaching workshops and training sessions on topics such as R programming, statistics, and generative AI. Targeting a diverse health science research audience, our training is inclusive and welcoming, and designed to build foundational skills that learners can integrate into their research, clinical care, or daily tasks. In collaboration with the rest of the team, the person in this role will also provide 1:1 consultations to UCSF learners, faculty, and staff to help them troubleshoot data science questions and connect them with campus resources. Consulting sessions may involve creating, reviewing, or debugging medium complexity Python, R, SQL, Unix, Git, or other data science related programming languages and technologies to access or analyze data in local or SQL data warehouses, code repositories, or other cloud based data stores. As community building is an essential goal of the DSOS team, the Data Science Instructor will also promote data science education and community through participation in campus outreach events and meetups.

In addition to their training responsibilities, the Data Science Instructor is expected to serve on UCSF and UC-wide committees to represent the Library's vision of inclusive data science. They will also contribute to data science-related task forces to support campus initiatives and projects such as creating training and guidance for using generative AI. Additionally, they will work with library colleagues in other units to expand knowledge and provide support for data intensive collaborations.

Finally, the Data Science Instructor is expected to continue developing their own data science skills, investigating new technologies and platforms that can benefit the UCSF community and spending time on special projects to pilot new approaches and tools within the Library and with partners across campus. Projects might involve intermediate application of programming, HPC/cloud computing, machine learning, and generative AI to the preparation and analysis of large scale data sets from a broad set of multimedia, including video, audio, image, and text data.
