The Child Mind Institute offers a one-year professional training program designed to prepare candidates for a successful career in clinical child and adolescent psychology. This position includes training opportunities in the Anxiety Disorders Center and the Mood Disorders Center. The fellowship will begin as early as July 1, 2024. Consideration will also be given to candidates who complete their pre-doctoral internship by the end of August 2024. This is an exempt position, located in our San Francisco Bay Area Office, which offers a generous salary and full benefits, as well as support for attending a professional conference or continuing education training.

Internship Program Information:

The and the are two of five centers that comprise the clinical treatment services of Child Mind Institute. The Anxiety Disorders Center offers innovative treatment services for children and adolescents suffering from anxiety, as well as comorbid disorders, through several specialized treatment programs, including the, , and the for trauma. The Center's clinicians are experts in the field in providing comprehensive clinical care using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), including exposure and response prevention (ERP), Parent Child Interaction Therapy adapted for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) and other evidence-based treatments.

The Mood Disorders Center offers cutting edge, evidence-based, tailored treatment for children, adolescents, and young adults suffering from mood disorders and related concerns. These include depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, suicidality and self-harm, and emotional dysregulation, as well as comorbid problems such as anxiety, substance use, exposure to trauma and executive functioning deficits. The center includes our comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program for children, preadolescents, adolescents, and young adults. Clinicians work intensively with children, parents, and teachers, and utilize a wide range of evidence-based intervention approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Behavioral Activation, mindfulness-based interventions, and Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) tailored for individuals with mood disorders. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in all facets of our multidisciplinary group practice.

The Child Mind Institute offers an extraordinary opportunity for a qualified clinician to receive structured postdoctoral training in a unique, innovative multidisciplinary setting. Training focuses on accurate assessment and diagnosis of presenting mental health concerns, and evidence-based treatment for children, adolescents, young adults, and their families. Clinical training and experience include conducting semi-structured clinical assessments, individual and group clinical work, didactics, participating in comprehensive individual and group supervision, providing education in the community, and supervision of externs (with oversight and training in providing supervision).

Fellows may receive specialized training in the treatment of children and adolescents with OCD and anxiety-related disorders and also in the behavioral treatment of children with Selective Mutism. They may also receive specialized training in CBT, DBT, and other evidence-based treatments for mood disorders, emotional dysregulation, and comorbid disorders. Fellows are strongly encouraged and guided to develop areas of interest and specialization.

As a component of the training experience, the fellow will also participate in a variety of learning experiences at the Child Mind Institute. Specifically, the fellow will attend multidisciplinary case conferences, clinical meetings with center staff, and attend lectures through our Visiting Professor Series, consisting of renowned experts in mental health. The fellow will also be given the opportunity to give presentations at schools and local community organizations. Additionally, there will also be opportunities to collaborate with website writers on specific topics for the Child Mind Institute website and with other services within the Child Mind Institute.

The ideal candidate will possess exceptional clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents, including experience with anxiety and mood disorders, and will have training and prior experience in using CBT interventions. The position will provide postdoctoral clinical hours and supervision needed for licensure.

Primary Faculty

The staff in the San Francisco Bay Area Office includes leading clinical psychologists, social workers and mental health counselors. Center staff regularly collaborates with pediatric neuropsychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and child and adolescent psychologists and other staff from our multidisciplinary clinical team. The clinical team based in California includes the clinicians listed below. Fellows will also have opportunities to work with clinicians in our New York office via virtual team meetings and training opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or PsyD degree from an APA-accredited program in clinical, counseling, school-clinical, or school psychology
  • Full completion of doctoral degree by the beginning of the postdoctoral fellowship
  • Successful completion of APA-accredited internship
  • Flexibility to work hours to meet productivity goals and deadlines, including afternoon / evening hours to accommodate school schedules
  • Team player and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Demonstrated professional attitude and ability to interface with senior management, clinicians and staff
