Job Summary

The UCSF School of Pharmacy, one of the top ranked schools of pharmacy in the country, is seeking an experienced and visionary Communications Director to lead the School's communications strategy and elevate our presence on the national and international stages. This is a strategic role that requires a balance of creativity, strategic thinking, and leadership to enhance our reputation, engagement, and impact.

The Communications Director will play a vital role in enhancing the school's reputation, increasing its visibility, and fostering positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders by developing and implementing effective communication initiatives. This includes developing and executing a comprehensive communication and marketing strategy, producing engaging and informative content across all types of media, managing the school's online presence through websites and social media, facilitating the sharing of information to internal and external audiences, and serving as a liaison to other communication units.

Department Description

The School of Pharmacy (SOP) has been number one in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) every year for over four decades. We train our students to think scientifically to solve health care's most pressing problems and to ensure that each patient receives the safest, most effective, and most cost-effective treatments available.

The Dean's Office of the UCSF School of Pharmacy supports the agendas of the Dean and the School's three departments, the ORU and their faculties, through activities in its administrative and advisory units. The School of Pharmacy is the Academic home to approximately 71 faculty, and 701 WOS faculty. The School employees about 271 non-faculty (residents, postdocs, and students), and 220 Staff with an annual operating budget of approximately $170M.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, health science, or a related field and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a lead/supervisor/manager.
  • Strong writing, analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
  • Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and the most appropriate and effective applications.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of technical applications to effectively manage / supervise professional technical staff, including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices and infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs, issues in higher education and / or health sciences, and / or specialized subject matter.
  • Solid management skills to select, train, evaluate, lead, direct, guide and motivate subordinate staff to produce high quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
  • Solid skills to create, develop and implement comprehensive long and short term strategic plans.
  • Solid knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences.
  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in public relations, communications, health or science field.
  • Five years of writing and editing experience.
