Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)

This position is responsible for driving a strong safety culture that eliminates risk for serious injuries at the Plant level through conversation and integration of safety into all aspects of operations, maintenance, and outage activities.

This position will provide strategic leadership in the designing of a wide variety of complex and technical safety solutions and will work closely with Plant leadership, and their employees, to build and implement a robust and sustainable safety performance. This position is a Safety Champion within our Operational Excellence model and builds the same within the Plant leadership and their teams.

This position will review, interpret, and advise management on complex safety compliance and policy matters. Has complete understanding of safety principles, concepts, practices, standards and regulations in addition to a background in industrial operations. Reviews applicable plant procedures and makes recommendations for updates according to laws, regulations, and good power plant practices and safety standards.

Collaborates with the Plant Managers and their teams to drive transformational safety improvement in behaviors, equipment condition, and work practices. Brings extensive plant and safety knowledge and experience to resolve complex safety issues and become a resource. Identifies risk items, and partners with plant leadership to eliminate the potential for serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs).

Shares knowledge in safety practices through effective communication while assisting in the identification of long-term solutions. Becomes familiar with assigned plant operations and work management processes for facilitate the administration of all risk assessment processes. Provides a direct safety resource to address the needs of the fleet.

Job Responsibilities

  • Actively collaborates, and facilitates conversations within leadership and in the field with the objective of improving regional safety culture
  • Engages at the plant level and develops relationships with all plant personnel through formal and informal interactions
  • Creates and maintains strong ties to Regional Leadership
  • Continually communicates and supports fleet safety messages
  • Collaborates with Operations, EHS, and Engineering when necessary to solve safety issues
  • Leverages a continuous improvement model of Plan-Do-Check-Adjust to ensure steady progress toward Operational Excellence.
  • Immediately reports and acts on issues with potential for imminent danger and raises concerns to the appropriate levels of leadership.
  • Provides technical safety and health guidance to plant, regional, and fleet entities.
  • Possess In-depth or broad, extensive industrial operations and technical safety knowledge.
  • Highly skilled safety professional with wide-ranging, advanced technical experience to resolve complex issues.
  • Competent to work at very high level in multiple knowledge areas and functions as an advanced contributor with regard to safety and safe work practices.
  • Advises operations on the safety and health considerations of complex project and advanced tasks.
  • Identifies and develops safety innovations from external sources, to establish new processes, tools, services, and techniques to support Calpine's core objectives.
  • Uses independent judgment requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Independently selects methods, techniques, analytical approach and evaluation criteria.
  • Determines methods and procedures for new assignments.
  • Serves as project/technical safety and health lead on medium to large projects during development and execution phases, engaging the of professionals, technicians and others outside of own department in all phases of the project.
  • Provides safety training on the specialized skills needed to improve safety culture
  • Collaborate and solve problems - works with others to resolve significant issues, clarify or interpret complex information, provide initial screening/negotiations.

  • Travel requirements 75%

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or 10+ years of power plant experience
  • In-depth experience across knowledge areas and multiple functions including safety regulations, project management, operations, and maintenance
  • Professional safety certification (GSP, ASP, CSP) preferred

Salary Information

  • Salary range - $148,837 to $189,767
