POSITION TITLE: Community Outreach Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Diversity Equity and Inclusion

REPORTS TO: Director, Diversity Equity and Inclusion

LOCATION: Lafayette, California 

GRADE: 5

STATUS: Full-time, exempt (37.5 hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for building relationships with the African American community to promote and expand the Alzheimer's Association program and services and increase engagement in the full mission.   An ideal candidate will have a broad established network in the African American community to build and expand our presence and engagement while mobilizing volunteers. The Community Outreach Specialist will help position the Alzheimer's Association widely to increase community awareness about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and engage those disproportionately affected and promote the Alzheimer's Association as the place to turn for all matters relating to Alzheimer's disease and related disorders.   

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement strategies that build community awareness of the Alzheimer's Association's services and resources in the African American community.   Expand the utilization of programs and services in the chapter and partner with colleagues to expand overall reach in the African American Community. 
  • Serve as a community liaison and spokesperson at relevant community events to build collaborative partnerships with strategic partner agencies to reach new constituents.
  • Recruit and train volunteers to serve as community connectors and educators.  
  • Develop, lead, and mobilize the Black Alzheimer’s Association Advisory  Council to elevate the Alzheimer's Association's presence and reach in the African American Community chapter wise. 
  • Schedule, plan, market, and oversee the delivery of core services and community forums to reach and serve the African American community
  • Develop and expand African American national and chapter-wide partnerships to meet Key Performance Indicators for our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion priorities (KPI-3).
  • Serve as a media spokesperson for the Association. Collaborate with the communications department in marketing strategies to engage African Americans on all communication channels. Foster full mission community engagement, including advocacy and signature events
  • Lead grant funded outreach efforts.  Track and report statistics for grant requirements. 

CULTURE OF COLLABORATION:

  • Fully engage in a culture where team collaboration is highly valued
  • Work as a team to accomplish, if not exceed, organizational goals in the National Strategic Plan
  • Participate in signature fundraising events, The Longest Day and Walk to End Alzheimer's.  Work at least one Walk event on the weekend. 
  • Respond to public policy calls to action & participate in advocacy days
  • Enhance our culture of diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the job
  • Promote and create opportunities for full mission engagement of volunteers. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work-related experience
  • 3 years of experience and demonstrated success in outreach to the African American community.
  • Community mobilization and volunteer recruitment and management experience
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Deadline and detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to manage multiple projects and tasks
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and demonstrate inclusion

  • Self-starter, including the initiative to proactively identify and refer projects to appropriate staff to assure the advancement of the mission
