PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Installs and maintains piping systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls and piping, using hand and power tools, and following specifications and blueprints.
- Selects type and size of pipe, and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to specifications.
- Cuts pipe using saws, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
- Threads pipe, using pipe threading machine.
- Assembles and installs a variety of metal and non-metal pipes, tubes and fittings.
- Connects pipes by welding or using joints, bolts and hand tools.
- Secures pipes to structure with brackets, clamps and hangers using hand power tools.
- Insulates pipe and equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Works on low and high pressure boiler systems as required.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid driver's license and drive a CTA work van to various locations as needed.
- Must pass a physical examination and perform the physical activities associated with this position.
- Must be a Journeyman Pipe Fitter with 5 years work experience as an apprentice or Journeyman Pipe Fitter.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Lifts, carries, and maneuvers material weighing up to 100 pounds.
- May stand, bend, stoop and kneel for extended periods of time.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of installation and servicing procedures for steam, hot water, lubricating, sprinkling and other systems, also gasoline and diesel fuel systems including underground fuel piping systems.
- Must possess a thorough knowledge of acceptable steamfitting/pipefitting practices and procedures.
- Must be skilled in the reading and interpretation of blueprints and schematic drawings.
- Required to be skilled in the use of various hand and power operated tools.
- Required to furnish certain hand tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Works outdoors in all types of weather, winter and summer.
- Works from ladders and scaffolds.
- May work near or adjacent to energized conductors and moving vehicles
- Travels throughout the CTA system.
- May be required to drive a service van.
- Works in subways; Bus Garages, Rail Shops; elevated rail system, steam tunnels, Arial jobs and various other CTA locations.
